The Tip of the Slippery Slope

The Top of the Slippery Slope

H.R. 45 - Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009

And so it begins, the liberals are now not only calling to reinstate "fairness" (read: liberal bias) to the radio waves where they see Conservative successes, they probably sense that the only way to do this is to first take our guns. I mean, after all, that's how the Nazis and the Soviets did it, why should Democrats be any different than their mentors?

Those of you vaguely familiar with the concept of logic (liberal visitors to this site may want to Google the term or read some of the works of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle) will understand that the slippery slope of complete government control approaches. They start with a seemingly innocuous piece of legislation, tied to a "Save the Children Act of [insert current year here]" as an addendum, which creates some new type of government bureaucracy to monitor or control your freedom. Liberals, socialists, and communists understand that our founding fathers knew full well the dangers of government oppression, and that the 2nd Amendment was put into place to ensure that overzealous bureaucrats didn't dare tread on the rights and freedoms of Americans. They will tell you it's for your own good, and it's the best philosophical argument in their mind. After all they "probably have a much higher I.Q. than you do." (Biden quote to reporters) Of course, this doesn't apply to government, by any means. You'll see what I'm talking about in a minute.

Ladies and gentlemen, enter the 111th Congress, stage left. After passing a "stimulus" bill that spends $800 billion dollars that we don't have, calls for "fairness" (censorship), and a series of blunders by the Executive Branch in its handling of cabinet positions, we now have H.R. 45, which is step 1 in the liberal agenda of removing guns from all citizens.

Not a licensed gun collector of dealer? Well, you better have a license, or agents will be at your door, confiscating your weapon, and sending you to prison for 2 years!

Got kids? Well, you may not have guns if the government has anything to do with it. By a loose interpretation of this vague law, we may see such restrictions.

After an entire bill of restrictions on citizens' rights (which will be duly challenged in the Supreme Court if this bill comes to pass), here's my favorite section:

...

SEC. 801. INAPPLICABILITY TO GOVERNMENTAL AUTHORITIES.

This Act and the amendments made by this Act shall not apply to any department or agency of the United States, of a State, or of a political subdivision of a State, or to any official conduct of any officer or employee of such a department or agency.
...

--Texas Outlaws

Keep a track on the House here.

--J. Dallas Brooks, *unlicensed Gun Owner

*this will be "outlaw" after passage of the bill, I presume

The Culture of Death

The Culture of Death

by JD Brooks (www.offeringcommonsense.blogspot.com)
Nadya Suleman is a 33 year old single mother who recently delivered 8 babies (octuplets), while she already had 6 other children (who were born together as sextuplets). Her doctor implanted her with the 8 embryos, figuring that many do not make it through the entire pregnancy.

Miracle 1: they did.

While a traditional family (with a husband and wife serving as father and mother for their children) is known to be the best situation in which to raise children in our society, and while there are ethical dilemmas with medical fertilization when we begin to see the press coverage of Nadya and her 14 children we see the culture of death emerge.

Here are only a few excerpts from ONE STORY about Nadya [and my responses]:

Ann Curry: “People feel, you know, this woman is being completely irresponsible and selfish to bring these children in the world without a clear source of income and enough help to raise them.”
[Ann, I suppose you're supporting the definition of a traditional family, and you aren't calling her children an irresponsible mistake? Just let me know where the non-profit foundation's email address is that NBC has set up for this woman and her 14 innocent children.]

NBC Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Snyderman: “There’s a phenomenal risk to eight babies. Eight babies, by definition, cannot be born normal weight and robust.”
[Cannot be born normal? Dr.*Snyderman, you seem to fail to realize just one thing: the children are doing exceptionally well, growing larger and stronger everyday. We'll just put an asterisk by that little fatalistic statement of fact and call it a theory...just like I'm putting the asterisk by your title...doctors should by definition support life, not death. You're playing for the wrong team.]

NBC’s Psychiatrist Dr. Gail Saltz: “Undoubtedly these eight children are going to have issues: at the minimum, the issue of neglect… There will probably be developmental delays at best in these children; maybe learning disabilities. There are going to be major issues that they’re going to need various therapies for.”
[Wow! Imagine that! A Psychiatrist that believes 8 patients will "need various therapies." Now there's a shock. Moron.]

I understand the discussions about a welfare state, traditional families, medical ethics, and the like, but you are all missing the point here if you're debating this now. These are 8 living, breathing human beings with souls. They do not deserve your condemnation. Nadya's only crime is that she isn't involved in a gay relationship and that she didn't abort 7 of the children at 8.5 months of pregnancy. That would, at least, give her some media sympathy. Ladies and gentlemen, perhaps it's time to stop casting stones, and offer a donation or two to Nadya's children?

Guns, Not Cameras, Prevent Crime!!!

www.offeringcommonsense.blogspot.com

Guns, not cameras, prevent crime!

The University of California has just completed a study on the efficacy of San Francisco's numerous surveillance cameras. The result: they have no effect on crime. (Read it here) That's the liberal response to a criminal element...put up cameras while making gun ownership all but impossible.

Here's the American response, straight out of Kennesaw, Georgia! This Georgia town mandated that all homeowners MUST possess a firearm to protect their property. There are a few exceptions for religious objections, etc, but by and large, this Southern town took criminals to task. Lawful citizens back in 1982 said to criminals, "come and get it" and crime dropped by 74% the first year! Since passage of the law, there have only been 3 murders to date...two of them committed with knifes.

The socialists-liberal agenda wants to control the citizenry, seeing only numbers, not individuals. By restricting our rights to gun ownership, they are effectively removing our self-reliance, and placing it firmly in the hands of government. Public schools preach a reliance on the government as if it were Gospel, and endless public service announcements, liberal Hollywood productions, and writings tell us that the proper response is to sit and wait for the police (i.e., the government) to take care of our problems. Police do not prevent crime, citizens do. The police are vital to a civilized society, but only in the fact that they capture known criminals, and investigate past crimes. An officer will do a nice job of drawing a chalk outline around your body for you, but a Colt 9mm will probably keep you alive during a home invasion.

The results of the UC study shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone. Criminals think in the immediate present, with no regard for future or near-future consequences of their actions. A camera presents a far-off future possibility to a criminal, much less important than the immediate gratification of taking your money or your life. A Saturday Night Special out of the purse of a would-be victim...now that presents more of an immediate concern for the bonehead criminals!

The answer to almost any problem in a free society is to create MORE freedom, not less. Many of our problems revolve around our lack of true freedom (e.g., gun restrictions in areas of high crime, government intervention in the free markets in the form of institutions like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, etc)

Calling Down the Thunder!

"You called down the thunder, well now you got it! You see that? It says United States Marshall. I see a red sash, I kill the man wearin' it. So run you kerr. Tell all the other kerr's the law's comin! You tell 'em I'm comin', and hell's comin' with me, you hear...HELL'S COMIN' WITH ME!!" -- Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp, Tombstone

Anyone who doesn't get chills from that scene in the movie Tombstone, isn't playing with a full deck. I can't help but think of the United States as a Marshall in the wild west atmosphere of our free world, where terrorists threaten civility. On 9/11 they called down the thunder, and we've hit back hard, consistently, and without hesitation ever since. Much to the consternation of lesser nations who would allow terror to be dealt with in mock courts after the fact, we have demonstrated leadership as a nation. Israel is doing the same thing with Hamas. Terrorists shot rockets into Israel, and they called down the thunder. Gaza residents are basically held hostage by their own people. Hamas starts the fight, tells Israel to bring it on, when they get their butts handed to them, they call for a public outcry. We see protests in New York, London, and elsewhere from Palestinians calling to end the plight of the people.*

*Note: ending the plight of the Palestinians can only be accomplished by killing all Jews, and ending the state of Israel, according to these "peace"ful protestors.

"Whatever we want to do!"

Seriously, someone needs to inform Sen. Reid what his actual authority is.  He is going to end up committing treason.

Dream on Prof. Panarin

www.offeringcommonsense.blogspot.com

In typical Russian fashion, a leading professor claimed recently that the United States is doomed for failure, and an eventual breakup. Igor Panarin says that the United States will break into 6 parts, the details of which are as unimportant as Panarin's opinion about our nation. Claiming that the dollar is backed by nothing, and that our people are suffering from record unemployment and discontent, the Russians think they smell blood. They believe that China and Russia will be the new regulators of the world.

They just don't get it.

The United States is not about a particular race, the dollar, or territory. We have survived, and thrived, as God's greatest contribution to civilization because of freedom. We have free will to act in our daily lives, and the United States is the epitome of that freedom. We need to get the debt down to $0, which means cutting out all deficit spending, lowering the tax burden on productivity, and spending less. A simple return to our Constitutional mandates would reduce our spending to a fraction of current levels. We will dawdle as a nation and eventually do this, but there's no question that our union is strong. That's not something I expect a Russian professor to understand.

Prof. Panarin, have you studied the Great Depression? Unemployment was 2.5 times what is is now, and we faced much more dire circumstances, but somehow the United States pulled through it, stars glowing and stripes blazing! It is Socialism that has never worked, and only an elitist would think that it hasn't worked because they weren't the ones in charge at the time. Instead of looking to Stalin, you need to look to Gorbachev for good policy direction. Freedom is better than fear.

Perhaps you'll also note that our Civil War, the greatest conflict this nation has ever faced (including the cold war), forged our bonds as a single nation, thanks to the Republican President Abe Lincoln!

Let's look at history:

USA -- a complete and unbreakable union
USSR -- the people rebelled against oppression and are now 15 distinct nations

Perhaps Prof. Panarin can learn more about the United States than he can teach us.

Nice try though. I'm sure your propaganda certificate is in the mail.

Geopolitical Implications after India's Terror Attacks

First accounts are still trickling in, and many times first impressions of an event are the least reliable, but we know a few things for certain. India is under a massive terrorist attack, and Muslim fanatics are claiming responsibility. The Global War on Terror is not over, and the enemy is seeing weakness.

The world needs to realize that we, the civilized and free society of planet Earth, are in this struggle together. Other nations cannot pay lip service to fighting terrorism, while letting the United States handle the brunt of the fighting (and the criticism). It is my sincere hope that we stand in solidarity with India, a democratic nation and an ally, with more than just words condemning attacks. It is time to step up and kill the enemy.

On the surface this looks like another pre-coordinated Al-Qaeda-style attack. Multiple symbolic targets were chosen, simultaneous attacks were carried out, and many innocent people were killed. What we have to realize is that India has begun to show its solidarity with the free world and become more aggressive against terrorists. It was the Indian Navy that opened fire on Somali Pirates in Africa, and the rest of the world should follow that example. Pay their ransom, free the hostages, then send the pirates to hell courtesy of a tomahawk cruise missile.

Indian Army officials are now claiming that these terrorists have come from Pakistan.

Bad news.

The long-standing struggle over the Kashmir region, and the discord between Hindus in India and Muslims in Pakistan is clearly demonstrated in history. The minute British forces left the region, all hell broke loose. Pakistan and India have fought in 3 major wars (1947, 1965, and 1971). All three ended with UN mediation, but all three felt strong interference from the Chinese, who saw a power vacuum that they wanted to fill. The United States and Great Britain were able to neutralize Chinese intervention then, but today brings a much different reality.

Since 9/11, the United States has greatly increased its influence over the region, but this is a tricky venture. With almost 300 million Muslims in the area (in both Pakistan and India), a disputed region of Kashmir, and un-governed regions in Waziristan run by warlords, the Indian Ocean is sitting under a powder keg. Here's the other MAJOR problem for the region. In the 1947, 1965, and 1971 wars, neither nation was a nuclear power; today both are.

Now is a "time for choosing," to borrow a quote from Ronald Reagan's great speech. It is time for Americans to choose to surge against the terrorists worldwide, just as we surged successfully in Iraq. It is time for India to choose to be a staunch ally, complete with military forces, of the United States in the Global War on Terror. It is time for Muslims in the region to choose freedom over tyranny, and end the implicit endorsement the extremists among them with their silence. This is not a war between Muslims and Hindus, Christians, or Jews. This is a war between oppressive tyranny and a free society.

It is a time for the rest of the world to choose a side. You can no longer sit idle and netural, declaring yourself beyond the conflict. This not WWI redux, and we have no colonial interests in any of these regions of the world. The United States wants to be free, spread freedom, and be left alone. It seems that the rest of the world suffers from superpower-envy, and fails to do what is necessary for fear that it will put them in line with the United States!

Nap time is over. Wake up and smell the threats before it's too late.

The tendency has been to weigh security v. freedom, as if it's some sort of pendulum, with mutually exclusive principles at work. This is not the case. Free societies do not need to mirror tyranny to remain free during the threat of terrorism. Governments need to relinquish their power over their own people, and focus on the bad guys. You cannot prevent terrorist attacks; you can only mitigate them.

Look at Israel. Their citizens are armed to the teeth, and whenever Palestinian terrorists attempt to carry out mass shootings in markets, they are met with 20 or more armed Israeli civilians and sent to their final destination with expediency. I bet you'd get a similar result in Texas. An armed populace can do more to defend itself from the inevitable than border guards spaced out every 100 miles, and spot checks on cargo ships.

You cannot prevent a terrorist attack, but you can prevent terrorists from breathing. The United States has successfully defended not only itself, but the free world against terrorist threats, but we cannot do it alone. By capturing and killing countless terrorists, the world is better off, but it is never completely safe. London and Madrid are 21st century examples the reach of worldwide terrorists, but the general theme is the same. Muslim extremists killing people of all faiths that do not share their wild views.

Now is a time for choosing, but let us choose wisely. Equivocating for the sake of international diplomacy is a fool's choice. We must stand by our convictions, with courage, and in defense of freedom.

**Update**
2 Americans are hurt in the India Terror attacks.
**Update 2** We're hearing 2 Virginians were killed.  In my view, this is nothing short but an act of war.  If this terror group is a new one, they should be on our list now.
